DANCE STYLES

ACROBATICS

Focusing on stretching, strength, conditioning and flexibility, this style incorporates various elements of acrobatics including tumbling, cartwheeling, balancing and lifts.

Level 1 – No experience required.
Level 2 – Dancers must be able to demonstrate the following skills; cartwheel, straight over, bend back kick over, round off.

Compulsory uniform - Black leotard, black ¾ or full length leggings or boy leg shorts with tan footless tights, flesh coloured briefs, bare feet and hair tied back, headband recommended.  See uniform specifics below.

BALLET

Classical ballet draws on specific technique that gives you a full understanding of your body.  The class focuses on building strength, flexibility and core stability is recommended for all dancers to build a strong technical foundation.

Pre-Kindy to Kids Club
Black or pink leotard, flesh coloured briefs , black or pink ballet skirt, pink ballet tights, pink ballet shoes with elastic; hair in tight bun.  

Pre-Junior to Pre-Senior
Black leotard, black ballet skirt or boy leg shorts

Senior
18+ Leotard, pink ballet tights, ballet skirt or boy leg shorts.

Boys
Black fitted tshirt/singlet, black shorts or tights, black ballet shoes with elastic.

BREAKING

B-boying and b-girling - better known within the media as breakdancing - is the original dance of hip hop to come out of the Bronx, New York in the 1970’s.  Since its resurgence in the 1990’s, this freestyle dance to funk and hip hop has gained popularity across the globe.  You will learn the essentials to becoming a b-boy or b-girl, from top rock and down rock, to power moves and freezes.

Non-restrictive street wear such as track pants or long shorts with a t-shirt or tank top, sneakers, cap, bandana and knee pads.

COMMERCIAL HIP HOP

Developed through the entertainment industry, commercial hip hop is seen in music videos and concerts.  This style focuses on choreography to popular music whilst maintaining an urban presence.  

Comfortable clothing allowing you to feel good and move freely, such as track pants, leggings, t-shirt or tank top and sneakers or boots.

CONTEMPORARY

A creative dance form which combines strong technique with a sense of release.  Choreography usually tells a story or portrays a theme and can rely greatly on the contribution of the dancers themselves.

Pre-Junior – Pre-Senior (compulsory uniform)

Senior 18+

DANCEHALL 18+

A fluid, earthy style of hip hop that is infused with a Jamaican flavour.  Inspired by reggae music, it is known for its energetic feel and sometimes rugged vibe.  Rhianna, Missy Elliot and Sean Paul are artists who have incorporated Dancehall into their choreography and video clips.

Comfortable clothing which allows you to move freely such as track pants, leggings, t-shirt or tank top and sneakers.

FUNKY DANCE

A fun and energetic introduction to dance focusing on rhythm and movement, using elements from Hip Hop and Jazz.

T-shirt/tank top, non-restrictive shorts, track pants or leggings and sneakers.

HIP HOP

Hip Hop may have many individualised styles but the roots lay in the party grooves and improvisational steps originating from the streets and clubs.  With the blending of different music styles, hip hop continues to re-invent itself with a broader range of influences and freer expression.

Comfortable street wear such as track pants, long shorts or leggings with a t-shirt, hoodie or tank top and sneakers (no jazz boots); accessorise with hats or caps.

HEELS 18+

A class in heels for dancers who want to build confidence & strength in their performance.  The style’s changing rhythm can range from strong dynamic accents to captivating slow, sensual choreography.  You will be sure to leave feeling classy and empowered.  

Comfortable clothing allowing you to feel good and move freely, such as track pants, leggings, shorts, t-shirt or tank top.  Sneakers for the warm up and heels or boots for the remainder of the class.

JAZZ

Jazz is a theatrical style of dancing that incorporates technique such as kicks, turns and leaps and is great for developing flexibility and fitness.  Often associated with musicals such as Chicago or Fame, jazz is also the style used by pop stars such as Kylie Minogue, Madonna and Britney Spears and often features in pop concerts, opening ceremonies and music videos.

JAZZ FUNK 18+

A commercial style with a hip hop flavour fused with street jazz.  Movements can range from smooth and funky to expressive and strong, creating a fun and high energy class.

Comfortable wear which allows you to move freely such as track pants, leggings, t-shirt or tank top and sneakers.

LATIN FUSION 18+

Based on Latin dance styles originating in Cuba and Spain, Latin Fusion is a fresh and exciting combination of Latin technique and movement with an urban influence.  This high energy style combines solo and partnering choreography to a mix of traditional Latin and commercial music. Latin Fusion draws on true Cha cha, Samba, Rumba, Jive, Paso Doble and Salsa technique, but with a twist.

Comfortable wear which allows you to move freely such as track pants, leggings, t-shirt or tank top. Sneakers with a thinner sole to allow dancers to be grounded into the floor.  Socks may be required when Latin technique is taught.

LYRICAL

Combines the techniques of jazz, contemporary and ballet.  Lyrical invites dancers to use their bodies to interpret the music.  While mainly choreographed to music with lyrics, “lyrical” generally refers to the expressive, melodic and highly emotional quality of dance.  Dancers gain fluidity of movement, grace and control.

POINTE 15+

Pointe is part of classical ballet technique made possible by pointe shoes.Designed for dancers with previous training, classes include barre exercises, centre work and across the floor combinations.  

Ballet attire (see above) and pointe shoes.

It will be at the teacher’s assessment and discretion as to when dancers will go en pointe.  Their safety is our highest priority.  In the initial stages, whilst dancers are strengthening their ankles dancers will begin training on demi pointe.

URBAN LYRICAL 18+

Combines the techniques of contemporary and ballet with the stylised flavour of urban choreography.  It allows dancers to use their bodies to interpret music in a way that blends fluidity and articulation.  Movements are choreographed to accent not only lyrics but also beats/sounds, whilst capturing emotion.  

Leggings, shorts or harem pants, a comfortable top, knee pads and bare feet.
